Today, I Will Change

What is one thing you currently do, that when you really think about it, you know is unethical? For example, do you think it is unethical for people who seek positive reviews online to ask people who give them negative reviews to post only positive reviews, or to remove their negative reviews for a reward? There are many examples in this world of things we do that are unethical, but most of the time we may not realize we are doing them. We may justify what we are doing. We may even be ignorantly hypocritical because we ask others to not to do something when, without realizing it, we also participate in what we are against. If you have something like this, I would like to encourage you to reflect on that thing and decide to change. Decide to research a little more the reasons and develop a pros and cons list. Know the facts. Develop a thorough argument. Have strong reasoning to back you up. Now, I am not only going to ask you to do this, but I am going to do this myself.

Project 7 Web Page

P7PhillipPriceScreenshot

  1. Description: This web page project showcases my skills in web design and ability to effectively and creatively work with both HTML and CSS.
  2. Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): This project was a two week learning effort. I used a logo I created for a previous project and created a web page to describe the process of creating the logo.  I began the first week by learning HTML and coding the basic web page.  The basic web page and content was the easy part.  I spent a lot of time the second week editing in CSS to make the page look more creative. I chose fonts that were complementary to one another and helped keep the same general feel of the actual logo.  I used Adobe Illustrator to create and edit the logo, then saved it as a png file resized for the web so that it would not be pixelated. I wanted to make sure the logo was big and took the attention right away. After that, the headers were given more contrast by creating a rectangle of the same color as the background behind them, but with full opacity.  The background of the web page was an original image/texture that I created out of Illustrator as well, using the pattern tool.
  3. Message: This web page explains the process of creating a logo for “Waffleland”.
  4. Audience: All people learning about web design.
  5. Top Thing Learned: I loved learning about CSS. One thing I was impressed with when working with CSS was that I could put my own image in the background.  It made for a fun background to look just like more waffles behind the body and header text.
  6. Color scheme and color hex(s): Analogous; orange, gold, yellow, white. #f99d1c,#865923,#ffffff
  7. Title Font Families & Category: Titillium Web, Sans-Serif
  8. Copy Font Families & Category: Playfair Display, Serif
  9. Changes made to the CSS: The major changes made to CSS were as follows. I changed the opacity of the body background down to 70%. I also added rectangles of full opacity to the headers. I changed all the font colors to match the color scheme. I changed the font families to complement the logo. I added my own background image that I created myself. Also, I limited the size of the body background so that it would not get bigger than 660px and it would not go smaller than 325px
  10. Word Count: 277

Business Card (Large layout):

P6PhillipPricebc

Description: I created a letterhead and business card with my own original design of logo for a fictional company.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): As always, to begin this project, I started brainstorming by using internet searches and Pinterest for inspiration for business cards and stationery.  I once I had a couple thoughts, I started drawing up sketches.  One of the original ideas that stayed throughout the process was the idea of the “O” being a design of two to three half circles drawn out and placed at mismatching sides.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I transferred a few sketches into vector graphics. I put a pointed design coming off both sides of the circle then later changed it to the more obvious image of a key. I used the pathfinder tool to cut and merge certain parts and pieces of the key icon.  After finding that everyone I talked to liked the blue color the most, I stayed with the split complementary color scheme. I felt like the color scheme is good looking, but still gives a professional feel.

I transferred all the images I made for the logo and letterhead over from the illustrator file into a new InDesign file. Then I arranged all the images in the places they needed to be for the completed project.  I saved both the letterhead and business card InDesign files and then made a new 8×7 layout file for the larger image of the business card.

Message: The message I intend with this project is to have a professional looking security systems company.  People would look at this business card and feel that they would be safe in looking into this security system for their home.

Audience: Middle-class to upper-class families and parents looking for a way to keep their homes and children safe.

Top Thing Learned: The best thing that I learned while doing this project was using the pathfinder tool in Illustrator to cut and merge objects to create vector graphics.

Color scheme and color names: Split-complementary; teal, orange and red.

Title Font Name & Category: Squared Display; Modern

Copy Font Name & Category: Bodoni 72; Oldstyle

Project 5 Logos

PhillipPrice-P5Logos

  • Description: This project tested my skills will Adobe Illustrator to create a logo.  I chose a fictional waffle house franchise and created a simple logo and icon for them.
  • Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):  I created the logo and icon on Adobe Illustrator. I used vector graphics to draw the waffle icon to look almost like a city with buildings in the lighter colored squares and the background in the darker colored squares. I used a layer cut to keep the outside of the squares to be cut off in a circle so that it looks just like a waffle.  I made sure to align the text with both the waffle icon and the smaller text on the bottom. This logo looks good whether large or small because it is so simple. The color scheme includes golds, oranges, and yellows because those are the colors most associated with waffles and breakfast. The colors have good contrast, and the alignment of the text and the icon create good flow and unity.
  • Message: The message I am portraying is a warm, comfortable and inviting country or city style waffle house that serves breakfast foods all day.
  • Audience: My audience is specifically for the family.  This is a fun family friendly environment and anyone is welcome at anytime.
  • Top Thing Learned: One thing a learned about this project is how good a logo can look for how little there is in the image.  Simple is best in this project.
  • Color Scheme and Color Names: Analogous: Orange, Gold, Yellow/Monochromatic: Gold
  • Title / Body Font Names & Categories: OZ Handicraft BT, Sans Serif/ Baker Signet, Serif

Project 4 Montage

PhillipPrice-P4Montage-Spiritual

  • Description: This project proves my skill in making a montage of multiple images with a spiritual theme.
  • Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): In formulating a plan for my montage, I knew I wanted to use a scripture and since I have been studying the Old Testament, I wanted to use a scripture about the creation.  Organizing for the montage I brainstormed what animal, forest and sky images might be appropriate. I found the good contrasting background of the trees and found the orange and blue color scheme.  Using photoshop, I blended all of the images using layer masks.  I also adjusted the light and dark levels on the sky and the animals by using the selection tool and more masks to get the right amount of light for each part of the montage. I used a texture with a mask on the top of the montage to give it somewhat of a scratchy, grungy look.  For filtering, I used only a sharpen filter to sharpen the trees and the animals.  The text involves drop shadows and overlay settings. The kerning for “Genesis 1:31” is expanded a little and the leading between all three pieces of text is the same.  I aligned the edge of the text with the back of the horse and with the top of the trees.
  • Message: God is a creator and he creates things perfectly. In the creation of the Earth, he saw that all things he created were good, and I believe, made him happy.
  • Audience: My audience is all people all over the world, whether or not they believe in God. I hope that this message could be inspirational to all people.
  • Top Thing Learned: I learned how to blend images well, making it seem like I used less photos than I actually did.
  • Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: I used a sharpen filter on the trees and on the animals to make them stand out more.
  • Color scheme and color names: Complementary, Orange and Blue
  • Title Font Name & Category: Helvetica Neue Thin, Sans Serif
  • Copy Font Name & Category: Geometric Slabserif 712 BT Medium Italic, Slab Serif

Project 3 Photodesign

P3-PhillipPrice

  • Description: This photo design project is created with the intent to practice taking a good quality photo and to learn design skills on photoshop. We also needed a color scheme that the image had all the colors of the scheme and then the same colors were used one other time in the project besides the image.
  • Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles): The program I used was photoshop as part of the Adobe Suite. I focused on using a fun color scheme to bring out a simple and exciting message.  I used the rule of thirds when I took the picture of the football player. I also focused on the football player by adjusting the camera’s settings to blur the background.  I used photoshop to brighten the image and create the design elements of the blue and orange on top and bottom of the image.  I used a font that is very similar to the font on the back of the player’s jersey so it would all match well.  Although I used blue and orange design elements, I used white text so that there was not so much tension between the contrasting colors.
  • Message: My message is to invite students who want to play sports and have fun to come join rec-sports.
  • Audience: Students at BYU-Idaho interested in playing recreational sports are part of the audience.
  • Top Thing Learned: I learned how to use the quick selection tool to take different parts of the picture and lighten them to different shades.  The picture was originally darker and the player was in the shade, but I was able to make the image look clearer and brighter without making it look artificial.
  • Color scheme and color names: Complementary, blue and orange
  • Title Font Name & Category: College Slab Bold, Slab Serif
  • Copy Font Name & Category: Corbel, Sans Serif
  • Thumbnail of original, unedited image inserted:
  • IMG_0089
  • Date and location you took the photo(s): October 14, 2015, at the BYU-Idaho football stadium.

I loved taking these pictures for this activity.  This was my first experience actually using a high quality camera. Although it was difficult to get used to all of the settings of the camera, I became excited once I started seeing some good quality photos come out of what I shot.  For the first one, I found a nice scene of the trees and the road which had a very good color scheme.  I made sure that I could see the blue sky and it contrasts well with the orange tree leaves.  The second picture was taken with food inside for a different lighting effect. The lights came from overhead lights in a classroom and some light from a phone.  The next two pictures were of the same spot in which I adjusted the focal point from the berries to the trees that were behind.

The last two photos were taken out on the football field during a regular practice.  I stood relative to the players so I could take pictures of them where they were facing inward and lined up into thirds.  Both of the football photos demonstrate good positioning of the subjects into thirds.  The last photo is perfect for the lead room as the football player is looking straight ahead in the photo towards the middle of the photo.
